De vergeten geschiedenis van de chronometer Standards (Howard Series 11 Circa 1918) 18 januari

Vandaag de dag wordt het woord "Chronometer" wordt bijna uitsluitend geassocieerd met Zwitserse uurwerken. De COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) is erin geslaagd om het woord in (onder andere) te monopoliseren maar velen misschien niet weten dat de normen daadwerkelijk werden geformaliseerd door Webster C. Bal in Amerika in de jaren 1890. Bijna 80 jaar voordat COSC en ongeveer 30 jaar voor de Société Suisse de Chronometrie de specificaties voor een chronometer werden opgericht in Amerika. Ze waren erg weinig veranderd en rebranded de Zwitserse norm. Deze re-eigening verdoezelt de tragische geschiedenis die leidde tot de regelgeving die de chronometer hebt gedefinieerd voor bijna een eeuw.
Maar al te vaak grote verandering komt tot stand door de tragedie. Chronometrie is helaas in deze categorie. In 1891, e-mail trein # 14 in botsing met de Toledo Express op Kipton Station in Ohio. Het effect trad vlakbij de Toledo Express normaliter getrokken op een zijspoor bij de doorgang van de veel kleinere en snellere posttrein mogelijk. Negen mensen werden gedood in het ongeval. De geloofden oorzaak was een zakhorloge dat was vier minuten traag.

In reactie op dit incident, Webster Ball, een Ohio juwelier werd opgedragen te onderzoeken en dit leidde tot de Railroad chronometer Standards van 1893.
De normen waren als volgt:

Terwijl de Zwitserse duidelijk een aantal van de bovenstaande eisen verwijderd, velen zijn opvallend vergelijkbaar met de normen van vandaag. Zeer kort na deze normen werden gepubliceerd, bijna elke Amerikaan horloge fabrikant nageleefd. Deze periode produceerde een aantal van de meest nauwkeurige (en mooie) bewegingen in de Amerikaanse uurwerken. Een van de meest populaire gebruikte was de E.Howard Series 11. Na een lange tijd van zoeken, trok ik de trekker over en vond een ik wilde service.

Een ding dat is met name van belang met deze oudere zakhorloges is om de toestand van de letters op de borden te controleren (en de verf nog in hen.) Als de letters zijn volledig intact is over het algemeen een teken dat het horloge niet over- is geweest schoongemaakt, slecht onderhouden, of mechanisch gereinigd (moderne methoden hebben de neiging om dit detail te verwijderen.) Ten tweede, zorgde ik ervoor dat de wijzerplaat had geen haarscheurtjes. Howard horloges hebben de neiging om slecht te lijden onder deze als de wijzerplaat is vastgeklikt op plaats vastgeschroefd op zijn plaats. Dit betekent dat het proces van het verwijderen van de wijzerplaat is een zeer delicaat zorgvragers en geduld. Railroad wijzerplaten ook de neiging te lijden hebben van slijtage als gevolg van de hendel set-mechanisme. Dit mechanisme vereist dat het glas worden verwijderd en een hefboom omhoog getrokken om de tijd. Daarbij werden de wijzerplaten voortdurend blootgesteld aan de elementen en daardoor vinden mint daarvan zijn taai.

Dit horloge was ongeveer zo perfect als ik wilde. Toen het kwam ik het op de timing machine en vond het werd meer dan 2 minuten snel per dag dus ik over het onderhoud van het draaiende. Na volledige demontage merkte ik een aantal functies die deze horloges wat ze zijn te maken. Elke brug, bord, en pik wordt gestempeld met het serienummer te behouden en te controleren of de originaliteit van het stuk. Gelukkig zijn al deze afgestemd. Een andere functie zelden gezien deze hebben zijn verstelbaar banking pinnen. Zonder het krijgen van technische is dit een interessante functie die het mogelijk maakt voor de fine-tuning van het echappement.

Na een zeer zorgvuldige reinigen van de handen, hermonteren, oliën en reguleren, wordt deze legendarische stuk loopt zoals het hoort. De vorm van dit horloge na bijna 100 jaar is krankzinnig. Dit is een horloge dat werd verzorgd en zal nog eens 100 jaar mee in goede handen. De SNZF17K1. Een Seiko 5 sports. Over het algemeen zeer vergelijkbaar op zoek naar de Sumo en de Marniemaster. De tweede hand is anders, samen met de ring. Het is niet een echte duiker, op slechts 100 meter waterbestendigheid. Op een stevige, stalen armband, het is iets meer dan 150. Op rubber, het is ongeveer $ 120. Ik hou van de handen op deze.

Seems to me that looking over my watch collection “black dials box” I appear to have quite a few pilot and military style watches – and here is another one that's due some wrist time.

AstroAvia Alarm Chronograph

This model comes from the value for money German manufacturer “AstroAvia” – the R70SL – there are quite a few models which are similar in general appearance though this is one of their alarm models.
Good solidly built watch with a reasonable quality and a well made case in satin finish stainless 316L steel. Dimensions wise it is 40mm diameter and 11mm height. Lug to lug is approx' 47mm. The case back is a plain solid screw fit with an internal rubber seal and water resistant to 30m. The crystal is hardened mineral glass.
Interestingly it is supplied with both a stainless steel bracelet AND a padded leather strap which is a useful idea. And this is quite well thought out as the lug strap fixing pins have alternate positions on the lugs to accommodate the two different systems and you certainly don't see that very often! However being particular about straps and so on I replaced the strap with a Birkenstock Alligator pattern Calf leather and white stitching – as the image above.

This model is Quartz and is powered by the very reliable Japanese Miyota cal OS8O chronograph movement and features 1/20sec timing – an alarm – and an analogue date window @3. Really quite comprehensive for a watch of this price.
The chronograph function displays a 12 hr dial, a 59 min sub-dial and a 59 sec counter and a 1/20 sec sub-dial indicator each sporting a red colored hand.
The dial face is matt black with white markers and numerals and the luminosity is handled by green “Superluminova” coatings. I have to suppose that this “lube paint” is probably the best there is around and it should compliment this clear dial design – though for proper night use “Tritium” would have been my choice, but that's just a personal thing.
The Alarm feature is simply set unlike some watches firstly by setting the alarm pointer – by pulling out the crown to the first position and turning clockwise to move the pointer to the desired time, then push the crown back in. Next using the small crown control on the opposite side of the watch – pull it out to set the alarm ON – pretty simple. Note there is a small alarm pointer indicator on the dial face to confirm the alarm status. I had a concern the alarm crown control might get pushed back in with movement of the wrist – though I have to confess its never happened yet, so no worries after all. The Alarm indicator hand is red colored with luminous infill at the pointer end which is very clear.
The alarm sounds for 15 seconds, stops for 2 min 45 secs then sounds again for 15 secs etc. which it does several times after that.

The date adjusts like most watches as indeed do the hands setting and so on, so pretty conventional.
The battery is a SR927W or equivalent Renata 399 and there's also another feature of the Miyota movement where if after a battery replacement or if the hands for any reason get out of synch with each other, there is a chronograph reset function which resets and zeros the hands.
So all in all a pretty good and reliable watch at a very affordable price – around 180 Euros or so and you can see them by using Google search and typing in AstroAvia for the latest data. In fact the whole range of AstroAvia watches represent good value and certainly worth having a look at the range available.
So any down sides?
Well not really – you get a great watch for the money – a good alarm that's easy to set – a working 1/20 sec chronograph, a watch that keeps pretty good time and with a very reliable Miyota movement. Reverse engineering?

ou could argue that many of the complications you find on watches might well be more accurately described as gimmicks, as basically a watch is a tool to indicate the time – period. What with all the added functionality, boosted by the huge advance in electronics, quartz and all those amazing modules, it's hardly surprising.

But there are more fundamental “gimmicks” around and one such complication has fascinated buyers for years – and that's the reversing watch.
Why on earth would you need such a thing? Well Jaeger LeCoutre of course pioneered the Reverso and not as a gimmick at all, but as a solution to a sports problem. Namely to protect the watch face glass against breakage whilst the wearer played Polo. The watch basically could be turned mechanically within a frame so the dial was hidden underneath with the watch back facing the front and suitably engraved for example. In essence it looked more like a bracelet than a watch. It did however serve it's purpose perfectly.

The introduction of two watch faces however was the point when that practical solution evolved into gimmickry and fashion, instead of the original purpose of protection. It became quite popular of course, the rationale being a watch face for day and another for the evening – and very stylish too. Possibly cheaper in fact to have two watches, but it is a complication nevertheless has proved very popular.
Others have tried similar ideas not as protection of course, but as a fashion, function gimmick, which has a certain attraction.

Reverse “evening” face

The Rotary Evolution EGS0007-TZ2-19-06 reversing model appears to manage a passable reversing action and sports two different dial layouts.
I could see me using one in a day capacity as it has the Date window @6 and the other dial with the seconds sub-dial as my evening wear watch, so to speak.
However this model appeared some time ago and now seems to be discontinued, though the reasons are unclear. I've seen reports from buyers on Amazon that quite a few models sold had issues with one or other of the movements, for there are two separate ones in each watch and one or the other didn't work. Apparently this was because the batteries were out of date and owing to the less than sensible watch design, required a return to Rotary for any possibility of replacement.

And this is one of the main drawbacks of this two face reversing format – how to replace the battery or batteries? There is no watch back, but instead there are two fronts, so the only access to the inner workings appears to be from the front. (I thought initially that perhaps there was a side sliding access hatch, but seemingly not). So to expect an owner to somehow and without damage, remove the bezel, sapphire crystal and the dial assembly to get to the battery is simply unrealistic. Now OK Rotary operate a Lifetime Guarantee, but the hassle is something that most of us would rather avoid.
I note that access may be via one front only – the one with the seconds sub-dial, as it appears to have real bezel screws, where the other may be decorative only. Even if you managed NOT to damage that high gloss finish, I can also foresee possible problems with the crown stems!
And the most annoying thing is, I like this model as it looks really good and the You Tube video showing the reversing procedure also looks great, so disappointing to say the least. I also note they have some current models, but sadly they appear quite bland against this one and generate no interest in me whatsoever. Perhaps this model was a case of a less than perfect design – almost right, but with a basic flaw – battery access.
So going by appearance it should be a rather clever and intriguing model, but unfortunately it seems to be the “reverse”!

Now a reversing watch with a different agenda so to speak – this is the Xemex Offroad Cronus Reversible Chronograph Watch 501.03 – where the reverse face is not another watch dial as such (and let's face it what do you really need two watch faces?) but in fact a stopwatch.
The watch features a 60-minute dial for day-to-day use, while the other reverse side offers a proper stopwatch with both sixty-second and thirty-minute timers.

Lovely little articulated lug stainless steel case at 37mm diameter with a rubber “reversible” 18mm wide strap. A single ETA Swiss quartz movement with Date and Chronograph functions and Sapphire crystal. The black dial on one side has the standard watch function with Date and fully lumed hands. The white reverse dial is pure chronograph and such a brilliantly simple idea to put the chronograph indications on the reverse and allow a large stopwatch style dial to be utilized. Easy to use and easy to read instead of those more common hard to make out sub dials.

For me it's the relative simplicity of this model that's interesting and 3 points stand out –
1) No need for any fancy reversing mechanism as the watch is simply worn upside down to use the full stopwatch chronograph. Super simple!
2) Being mechanical there is of course no requirement for battery changes and so on. The only reason for internal access is servicing – and that I would leave to Xemex anyway.
3) The chronograph pushers/controls are on the left side and out of the way, when wearing the watch on the normal time side as they are not needed. When inverted/reversed to the chronograph dial however, they are now on the right and perfectly placed to use. Another so simple but cleverly thought out feature.
I already have a Xemex XE 5000 and have been delighted by it over a number of years now. Great value, excellent quality and timekeeping and the articulate lugs means absolute wrist comfort too, so it bodes well for this model.
The only question for me is – Do I actually need a chronograph? The answer sadly is no – as I can't actually remember the last time I used the chronograph functions on any Bekijk meer horloges replicas en breitling montbrillant horloge

The upright Golden Clipper

When collecting watches it's often the case that one particular brand is not too well represented and sometimes just for the fact that you never got round to it. And in the case of Bulova that's probably right in my case, though that said I did have a Bulova Accutron 218 many years ago which I sold on at the time as payment for another model.

However recently I bought an earlier Bulova from 1970 and for no other reason than I particularly liked the rather unusual case and dial layout. Note the luminous infill hour and minute hands, the red seconds sweep hand and the luminous dot markers at each applied minute marker, gives a clearly defined dial (note the luminous material no longer active). I particularly like the different background shades for the Day and the Date wheels, which aids clarity. And of course how could you miss the vertical Day and Date @6 which sets it apart from most watches and if honest the main reason for my purchase. The case is in polished Stainless Steel and oval in shape and whilst I've heard it called the UFO case, though maybe a personal observation by an owner and certainly not official, it is in fact quite a rare shape for a Gents model and a very decent size at approximately 37.5 mm wide and 39 mm lug to lug, and as a result it sits well on the wrist.
It also has the Bulova Automatic Swiss 17 jewel movement so is well specified, though from the dial you wouldn't know it was automatic, as it's not printed on the dial, the only dial text being the “T -SWISS-T” mark and the large text Bulova name @12. For me however it's just the combination of all of these factors that I find uniquely interesting.

Bulova produced a large number of watches over the years and amazingly eclectic variations were available in the 1970's but actually only a few models that featurde a vertical Day and Date display. Other were a 1972 Caravelle AK model and a 1973 Jet Star model 11634 with squared case and I'm delighted to say that my watch can be confirmed as the Golden Clipper model 11616 from 1970 (and the most expensive of the 4) and I attach an image from the 1970 McLeans Magazine advert running the Golden Clipper series and with the Stainless Steel 11616 model shown on the right. I note the advert text is sometimes difficult to read and has I think been misread in the MyBulova.com web site, but this clearer image shows it's definitely 11616. The 2nd marketing image is a newspaper clipping, which also shows this model as part of another Golden Clipper advert.
However it's always nice to have your watch model validated and with Bulova it's actually easier being a USA Brand when compared to most Swiss made watches, as the (USA) records are usually much better. But for the most comprehensive data I've seen, a visit to the mybulova.com web site and forum is very worth while being a mecca for Bulova owners, as it's a terrific source of information.
As to my new acquisition, I'm particularly pleased as it included the original Bulova watch box which is in very good condition. The watch itself was sold and described as 8/10 condition, though personally I might up that grading myself. Especially after checking out the movement which is in about as good a condition I've seen. Note the large italic B for Bulova cut out on the rotor which is a nice validation.

The movement is the 17 jewel 11ANACB automatic. Exterior wise after some careful and superficial cleaning with a small brush and cloth (no solvents used) the watch looks virtually as new. The stainless steel Kreisler Stelux bracelet signed Bulova is the original and in excellent condition and easily fit my wrist (the bracelet will fit up to approx 190 mm). For what is a relatively rare 45 years old vertical Day and Date @6 display Bulova Golden Clipper, the condition is pretty exceptional and has to be one of my best buys for a considerable time and I'm delighted.
An interesting fact about the 1970 Golden Clipper series is that Bulova ran a promotional campaign, where they commissioned Wilkinson Sword Company of London to produce a limited run of 100 presentation swords, one of which would be offered each of the first 100 customers buying this model. With an etched blade inscribed- “Bulova Golden Clipper – Presentation Award 1970” on one side and the Wilkinson Sword mark on the other. A promotional gift they may be, but they are full size, beautifully made and uniquely Wilkinson and actually pretty rare today!
In fact I could get one, but here in the UK importing such a sword might cause all sorts of problems, what with our Draconian blade laws. So whilst it would be nice to have the completeness of the collection (perhaps all 4 watch models plus the sword), I can probably do without the hassle.
Condition wise this watch is really very good considering it's age and it's managed to pick up only two small dings (one on the case back and the other on the lower front of the case), but these are hardly noticeable, which is why I would grade it as good as I do.
Setting the Day and Date on some of these old Bulova models can be tricky and time consuming, as there is no “quick set” Date here. Basically it's by means of hands movement, backwards and forwards, then over the am/pm, back and forth etc. to get the Day, Date and Time as you would like.
